What is a pulmonary embolism?

A clip from the Dr. Oz show of reality star Duane Chapman, also known as Dog The Bounty Hunter, made the rounds this week after Chapman announced he had been diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism.

This, of course, sent fans straight to Google to find out what a pulmonary embolism is. Let’s break it down:

A pulmonary embolism is a blockage, usually a blood clot, in the pulmonary artery. The pulmonary artery carries blood from your heart to your lungs.

A blockage here can prevent blood from flowing to the lung, causing it to die due to lack of oxygen.
